Cellulite Treatments

Even if you’ve been dieting to reach your desired weight, or if you work out and exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, had liposuction, or recently had a baby, you may realize that no matter what you have done your body still has areas of cellulite. Over 70% of women claim to have some unwanted cellulite.
From an anatomical point of view, the female body is different in that it has vertical connective tissues as compared to males who tend to have additional diagonal subcutaneous fat compartments, which is where fat is stored. However, the main cause of cellulite is hormonal, excess estrogen inhibits catecholamine-mediated lipolysis at the cellular level. These hormonal imbalances cause cellulitic changes to the subcutaneous fat layer over time. Fat in chambers becomes engorged, swelling within the chambers start to cause visible protrusion and impaired venous flow to tissues. Leakage of fluids and edema of these subcutaneous chambers where fat is stored occurs due to decreased venous flow (oxygen). The end result is decreased lymphatic drainage of the area due to inelasticity of the chamber/elastin fibers thus the presence of cellulite.

Contributing Factors to Cellulite?

  • Poor Vascular Function
  • Poor Lymphatic Drainage and/or Constriction
  • Stiff Connective Tissue (aging)
  • Trapped Fat (genetic disposition of fat chambers)
  • Poor Muscle Tone (inelasticity)
  • Your Lifestyle (smoking, alcohol, diet, etc.)

Cellulite will not be eliminated by dieting and exercise alone. Diet and exercise positively affect your body’s deep fat, but will not affect the fat associated with superficial tissues of the skin. Weight and fat may be reduced, but cellulite remains present even for women who exercise regularly and follow low-fat, nutritious diets. The best treatments for cellulite are those when cellulite first becomes noticeable. Cellulite is a progressive disorder and will not improve over time and will be more difficult to correct based upon the severity.
